The Positive Environmentalist
John Paling founded The Environmental Institute nearly two decades ago with the goal of seeking to support positive environmental initiatives by businesses, the group that he identified as offering the most significant way to make major improvements in environmental protection. The organization turned out to be an endangered species and went extinct after 5 years! John offers his reasons why positive environmentalism, as he initially conceived it, was ahead of its time and why it failed then – but can work now. He still views environmental challenges as a society-wide issue that requires everyone's collaborative support. He still believes that most good can come from acknowledging and supporting sound environmental initiatives by those groups that have the most influence - businesses and government. While recognizing that adversarial approaches can produce large improvements, Dr Paling speaks realistically about how easy it is to make small steps towards going green but how major improvements will require us all of us to make sacrifices for the good of the planet.
